Dora stretched as she woke up, wincing from a sharp pain in her neck. It took her a good minute of writhing around before something popped to relieve the discomfort. She had slept hard enough that she swore it had been longer. The chronometer proved it had been less than six hours.

And yet I still feel refreshed. I need to get to the bridge and check out what’s going on.

Her room felt cool as she got up but a quick turn through the shower helped level her out. Throwing on her flight suit, she looked at herself in the mirror. Dark circles framed her eyes, a result of stress and exhaustion.

Maybe I needed more sleep after all.

The ship trembled, a barely perceptible motion that she felt immediately. I plotted the safest route possible. Dora narrowed her eyes in thought. So what could’ve caused that? Hopefully, Ronnie was already up and about, preferably in Engineering. If something went wrong with the engines…

Well, that would practically be fatal.

Dora tapped her comm. “Captain Blake, do you copy?”

“I’m here,” Blake replied. He yawned before continuing. “Sorry about that. What’s up?”

“Did you feel motion in the deck?” Dora left the room, heading for the bridge. “Any motion at all?”

“No… why?”

“Because I did. Can you check the instruments? Make sure everything still shows green?”

“Yeah, they all look good to me.” Blake paused for a moment. “Yep, double-checked. I think we’re fine. Aren’t we? Are we not fine?”

“That remains to be seen.” Dora neared the bridge. She paused, glancing at the common area. “I trust Ronnie’s still out?”

“She never came up here if she isn’t.”

“Okay.” Dora burst in, taking a seat in the pilot’s seat. She logged into the terminal, running a full diagnostic. “We should not have felt anything. Not the way I plotted that course. So I’m a little worried that something’s jiggled loose or part of the navigational system screwed up on me. Did we jiggle or anything while I was asleep?”

“Nope.” Blake shrugged. “I guess it might’ve… I just didn’t notice?”

“Damn it.” Dora turned on the ship wide intercom. “Ronnie, wake up. We might have a problem. We need to double-check.” She looked at her diagnostic. It came back green. I wish I trusted that. She turned to the other monitor that showed how much longer they’d be in hyperspace.

One hour, fifteen minutes. That was within the realm of what she calculated earlier. Everything seemed to be going according to plan. So why the hell did I feel a rumble? Maybe I’m just sensitive. That’s a distinct possibility. After what they’d been through, she wasn’t surprised. After all, the situation had been traumatizing.

“Hey,” Ronnie’s voice came through the comm, “you woke me up. What’s going on? It feels like we’re still in hyperspace.”

“We are. I want you to check everything. I felt a tremor.”

“What?” Ronnie sounded alarmed, which validated Dora’s concerns. “Like… did it wake you up?”

“No, I felt it after.”

“Okay, well… that’s better at least.” Ronnie sighed. “I’ll head to the engine room right now.
